Morocco's Atlantic Coast — Essaouira, Agadir and Taghazout for Surfers and Wanderers
Zespół MoroccoForAll · 22.06.2026
The Atlantic coast is Morocco's gentler face: cool sea breezes that take the edge off summer heat, walled medieval ports, and a string of beach towns where the surf culture is genuine. Three towns matter most.
**ESSAOUIRA** (3 hours west of Marrakech)
Essaouira (formerly Mogador) is what Marrakech would be if Marrakech had the sea. The walled Medina is UNESCO since 2001, planned in the 18th century by a French military engineer (Théodore Cornut) — which is why it's the only Moroccan Medina you can actually find your way around. Grid layout, three main streets, blue shutters on white walls.
**What to do**:
- Walk the **Skala de la Ville** — the rampart with bronze cannons facing the Atlantic, where Orson Welles filmed parts of Othello in 1949 and where Jimi Hendrix wandered in 1969 (the "Castles Made of Sand" myth is doubtful, but locals love telling it).
- The **port** at sunset: blue wooden fishing boats, fishermen mending nets, gulls. Buy fresh fish at the dockside grills — choose your catch, they grill it, you eat with bread and salt for 50–80 dirhams.
- **Beach kite/windsurf**: Essaouira is one of the world's premier wind sports destinations. The "alizé" trade wind blows reliably April–September. Schools rent gear and teach. Magic Fun Afrika, Ocean Vagabond.
- **Argan oil cooperatives** on the road in: women's collectives crushing argan kernels (sometimes you see goats up in the trees — yes, they really climb).
- **Music**: Essaouira hosts the Gnaoua World Music Festival every June — half a million people, the city's biggest event.
**Where to stay**: Heure Bleue Palais (luxury, 250 EUR), Riad Mimouna (mid-range, on the ramparts), Atlantic Hostel (budget). Many riads from 40 EUR.
**AGADIR** (3 hours south of Essaouira)
Agadir is Morocco's package-beach resort, rebuilt entirely after a 1960 earthquake that flattened the original town. So: not historically interesting, but with the country's longest stretch of golden beach (10 km), modern hotels, easy infrastructure, and 300+ sunny days per year. Good for families, beach holidays, or one decompression night between trips.
The **Marina d'Agadir** (modern, restaurants), the **Souk El Had** (the largest in southern Morocco, 6 000 stalls), and a **cable car** to the old Kasbah ruins overlooking the bay are the main "sights." But honestly, Agadir is about the beach.
**TAGHAZOUT** (30 minutes north of Agadir)
This is the surf hub. Small Berber fishing village that turned into a chilled-out international surfer town in the last 20 years. A dozen world-class **right-hand point breaks** within 20 km: Anchor Point, Killer Point, La Source, Boilers, Banana Point, Hash Point. Best surf October–April when the Atlantic swells hit.
**Surf level**:
- **Beginners**: Banana Point, Crocodile Bay, Tamraght (next village)
- **Intermediate**: Hash Point, K-Spot, Panaroma
- **Advanced**: Anchor Point, Killer (when it works it's North Africa's best wave)
Schools and rentals everywhere: Surf Berbere, Surf Maroc, Sublime Surf. 35–50 EUR for a half-day lesson with board and wetsuit. Surf camps from 400 EUR/week including accommodation.
**Yoga**: pairs naturally with surf. Sublime Surf and Surf Maroc both run yoga + surf retreats. Sunrise on the rocks before paddling out, sunset rooftop sessions.
**Food**: tagines and fish at the seafront. Cafés Mouja and Anchor Point are the digital nomad / surfer hangouts.
**Stay**: Sol House Taghazout Bay (mid-luxury, on the beach), Surf Berbere Lodge (mid-range, surf-school combo), Taghazout Beach House (budget, friendly).
**Practical**:
- Atlantic coast water is cold year-round (16–20°C). Wetsuit needed for surf November–April.
- Buses CTM and Supratours connect Marrakech ↔ Essaouira ↔ Agadir. Comfortable and cheap.
- Taghazout: collective grand-taxi from Agadir, 20 dirhams.
- Wind in Essaouira can be relentless April–August. If you want a beach without wind, head to Sidi Kaouki (15 km south) or Taghazout.
**A loop suggestion**: Marrakech (3 nights) → Essaouira (3 nights) → drive Atlantic road south stopping in Sidi Kaouki and Mirleft (2 nights) → Taghazout (4 nights surfing) → Agadir airport home. 12-day loop, no internal flights, completely different Morocco than the Imperial Cities trail.
